Earthworm compost materials, such as Worm Power, have been reported in peer-reviewed scientific literature to enhance plant germination, plant growth and crop yields in both field soils and greenhouse crops.  Such increased productivity of crops, in response to vermicomposts amendments, have been attributed to greater availability of mineral nutrients (vs. inorganic nutrients in commercial plant growth media), as well as their rich microbial populations.  The presence of plant growth influencing substances, such as plant growth hormones and humic acids in vermicomposts has also been suggested as a possible factor contributing to the increased plant growth and yields.

Documented cases of earthworm compost-mediated plant disease suppression have also been reliably reported.  Disease suppression appears to depend on the biological activity of the material, although the specific microbial groups involved in disease suppression are as of yet unidentified. rn
